Davis vs. Cameron
If your into politics, you cant help but not avoid the Conservative leadership race between David Davis and David Cameron. But the real question is, who out of the two candidates is going to be the next Conservative leader? I for one was supportive of Kenneth Clarke when he was still in the race, but now that it is narrowed down to the final two, a few things need to be taken into perspective.
Firstly, who do we choose.....a young, talented individual who can bring a fresh look to the Tory party....or an experienced politician who understands both business and economics within the UK? Seems quite a simply "A or B" answer, but it does start to become complicated at this point!
David Cameron has only been in politics for approximately 4 years, and appears to take the more "moderate" approach to Conservative policies. On the other hand, Davis doesn't appeal greatly to the younger voters, and is known for having a slight lack of character when it comes to his speeches. So the question is now: "who do you support....the in-experienced politician, or the boring politician"?
In my opinion, the answer would so far have to be.....Davis. Why? Labour are a strong party, there is no doubt about it (with exception to Blairs recent defeat in the Commons over the 90 day terrorism bill), and fighting this next election is going to take the experience of David Davis to finally see a Conservative party in office. Also, it's rumoured that Blair is soon to stand down for the Labour leadership, making way for the Chancellor, Gordon Brown. I ask you, who needs character when your against Gordon Brown? If you asked me who had the most character out of Davis and Brown, i would probably have to say Davis! And finally, when Davis was questioned on 10/11/05 by the famous Jeremy Paxman on BBC2's Newsnight, Davis not only came across as confident, but also stated his policies for the Conservative party; which to me, sound like the policies which this country desperately needs.
I understand that many of you will feel differently to whom would be most suited for the Tory leadership, but even I am not entirely sure yet. On the 29th November 2005 however, both candidates are speaking at the Celtic Manor to a private audience. I managed to get tickets for this event, so it is likely that my final decision will be made then. For the time being though, the voting pendelum could swing either way for Cameron or Davis.
Davis has so far trailed behind Cameron for the Tory leadership, but 1 month of the contest still remains. Final voting: December 12th 2005
